Day by day
The itinerary
Day 01
Arrive, check in, evening at the Golden Temple + first kulcha hit
- 01Morning: / early afternoon: arrive Amritsar; check in at your hotel (see hotel list below). Freshen up.
- 02Late afternoon → evening: head to Golden Temple for the evening ardas and beautiful lighting/reflections at dusk. Walk the parikrama, descend to the causeway and soak the atmosphere. Finish with langar (simple, very hygienic).
- 03Dinner: / kulcha: Try Kulcha Land or Pehalwan Kulcha for the classic Amritsari kulcha experience (crispy, buttery, served with spicy chole). Both are iconic. If you want a historic dhaba vibe, Kesar Da Dhaba is a century-old institution.
Day 02
Historic Amritsar + Wagah Border ceremony
- 01Early morning (recommended): Golden Temple early morning visit (less crowded, special morning rituals).
- 02Mid-morning: Jallianwala Bagh (short walk from Golden Temple) — memorial and museum; then Partition Museum and Ram Bagh / Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s garden if time permits.
- 03Afternoon: local shopping (see markets below) + snacks (mathi/chole or golgappe).
- 04Late afternoon → evening: Wagah/Attari border ceremony. Leave hotel ~3–3.5 hrs before ceremony (traffic + security). Expect a patriotic, loud, theatrical ceremony — very popular with visitors.
Day 03
Farm experience & rural Punjabi meal + evening bazaars
- 01Morning: Drive out to a nearby farm stay/experience (options below). Activities: village tour, tractor ride, plucking veg, traditional farm-cooked Punjabi meal served in the fields (sitting outside on charpais), and cultural activities. Two recommended farm experiences: Chahal Farm (5 km from city; advertises tractor rides & traditional rasoi) and Punjab Village Farm / Farmer’s Villa (slightly farther but offers immersive stays). Book in advance.
- 02Evening: return to Amritsar; street food crawl or relaxed dhaba dinner.
Day 04
Last shopping, final kulcha / chole stop, depart
- 01Morning: finish any shopping (juttis / masalas / phulkari), pick up packaged masalas or ready-to-eat Punjabi snacks. Try one last kulcha/chaat stop (Hansraj, Ashok Kulche Wala or local favourite depending on where you are). Depart.
- 02Best chole-kulche & hygienic dhabas (must-tries)
- 03These are the classic, highly recommended names locals & travel writers point to
- 04Pehalwan Kulcha — legendary kulcha shop (opens early, often sold out by afternoon).
- 05Kulcha Land — very popular; great for first-time kulcha eaters.
- 06Kesar Da Dhaba — historic, vegetarian dhaba (100+ years). Very famous for traditional Punjabi dishes.
- 07Bharawan Da Dhaba — another century-old name, good hygiene standards and classic Punjabi fare.
- 08Bhai Kulwant Singh Kulchian Wale / All India Famous Amritsari Kulcha — local favourites often listed among “best kulchas”.
- 09(Tip: popular, long-running places tend to keep consistent standards. If you want specifically labeled “hygienic” modern restaurants, try branded hotels/restaurants around Ranjit Avenue and Lawrence Road too.)
- 10Hygienic yet authentic Punjabi food — other picks
- 11Hansraj Mathi Chole (for chole variants), Santosh Chaap & Naan (chaap is a vegetarian delight in many Amritsar lists), Kanha Poori Shop (for early morning breakfasts/snacks).
- 12Historic & cultural places to visit
- 13Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) — the city’s spiritual heart.
- 14Jallianwala Bagh — the 1919 massacre memorial and garden.
